Radiohead live from Germany in my living room

Saturday, May 27, 2006

I’m been rocking out to Radiohead’s “Updated Experimentation”, a live concert DVD, all morning. It’s pretty good, pretty damn good.

Never heard of it? That might be because you don’t buy DVDs from street fair vendors. I didn’t either, but Dave and I ran into an interesting booth on Columbus last Sunday. We were browsing through the selection when the proprietor, an older, rock and roller dude, offered to play them for us on his portable TV/DVD player. (You don’t get that kind of customer service from the average guy on the street selling King Kong).
We were impressed enough that I purchased the Radiohead DVD and Dave picked up a Led Zeppelin one (I’m sure Amy is thrilled).

So, if you’re in the market check out “Live Concert DVD’s”. (This is the literal spelling from the index card I was provided). The proprietor is Julius and he’s in the flea market at 4th and Broadway next to Tower Records. He’s open for business from 1 - 8 PM most days.

Deep down I somehow knew this when I bought my Nano a couple days ago: there are new Nanos on the way. Word is they will be 8 and 10 GB. I’m assuming the pricing will be in the same range.

Word is they’re coming in the summer or maybe early fall. If that’s the case I don’t really have any regrets–I really did want one now. However, if there are 10 GB versions later this year I’ll probably update. It’s day three and I’m already out of space on the 2 GB and there’s a bunch of additional music I’d like to be carrying.

I need to get out of the 90’s

Sunday, February 26, 2006

So I’m reading The Onion AV Club this weekend and a review for a new Elbows album and an album by some band called The Gossip gets me fired up on music for the first time in a while.

Inspired, and with about $32 left on an iTunes gift certificate my pals at Innersync gave me, I go music shopping.

The Gossip loses me early–the leader singer’s voice reminds me of some pop singer woman I don’t like, though I can’t name who it is. Elbow sounds good.

I start reading the Random Rules feature and see that David Cross, of Mr. Show “fame” seems to have pretty good taste in music.

Thanks to David Cross I end up purchasing DJ Shadow’s Endtroducing (1996) and the Guided by Voices Bee Thousand album from 1994. Sigh. Can I ever get beyond the 90’s?

(Side note: It turns out DJ Shadow is the guy behind the U.N.K.L.E. album. Note to self: always read album liner notes.)

At this point I plan to use my remaining $12.26 to purchase the new Elbow album, or maybe the one from 2004, and an episode of Lost. Either way, I’ll at least buy a couple things from this decade.

Then again, I’ve been meaning to pick up Husker Du’s Zen Arcade for, like, 15 years, and maybe this is a good time…
